After careful assessment and identification of the factors triggering the episodes of dizziness, appropriate techniques may be carried out to reduce current symptoms and/or an exercise program will be designed for each patient. This exercise regime is based on the rationale that repeated exposure will decrease the nervous system’s sensitivity to the stimuli. Balance and disequilibrium problems in the elderly have been shown to respond well to progressive balance retraining as well as specific stretching and strengthening techniques, based on assessment findings.

A session will involve a detailed history and assessment of your posture and pelvic mechanics. An internal exam is normally carried out (either vaginal and/or rectal) to assess the pelvic floor muscles. This is a digital exam only (no speculum) but it is not necessary if you have acute pain or are uncomfortable. It is important to find out how strong the muscles are, and if you can relax them properly. Based on the assessment findings and your goals, treatment will be tailored to suit you. It can involve advice, exercises, posture correction, manual therapy to the pelvis and internal muscles and possibly acupuncture or electrotherapy.

Christine has been with Treloar since 1994. A Queen’s University graduate, she moved to BC in 1990 and initially practiced in the hospital setting before making the move to private practice. In 1998 she successfully completed the requirements for the Advanced Diploma of Manual and Manipulative Therapy (FCAMT). She is now extensively involved in teaching and mentoring upcoming candidates for this certificate.

Christine believes that physiotherapy is a partnership between client and therapist and enjoys her role as facilitator and educator. She has a particular interest in pelvis, hip and lower limb problems and, as a dedicated runner she enjoys tackling the biomechanical problems that can interfere with successful training. Her passion for yoga has led her to certify as a yoga instructor and she uses this expertise to help interested clients explore the most beneficial approach to their own asana practice, and learn how to safely modify in order to accommodate existing injuries. In addition to her exercise and hands-on manual therapy skills Christine is excited to have recently added FDN Functional Dry Needling to her toolkit. She is enjoying integrating this powerful technique into the treatment of select clients with myofascial and persistent pain issues.

Outside the office: In her free time you’ll find her running in the neighborhood, rollerblading the seawall, biking the Lower Mainland, reading at the beach, zigzagging across the golf course, or maybe, off on her latest travel adventure.
